Welcome everyone! We will begin the chat momentarily. At that point, all messages will go through the moderator, and Jordan will attempt to answer as many as he possibly can. This chat is in celebration of the release of Jordan's new album [which is tomorrow] entitled The Road Home. For more click here |

When did you first discover you had this talent of yours??? |
| 2007-09-11 20:02:21 |
Rudess |
My mom discovered it when I was a kid and I used to dance around strangely whenever there was music playing |
| 2007-09-11 20:02:50 |
Rudess |
then my second grade teached called home one day to say that I was playing the piano beautifully. Of course there was no piano yet at home so it was again a little odd |

Ok, Jordan, Why is the album called The Road Home? I really would like to know |
| 2007-09-11 20:03:17 |
Rudess |
It is called the Road Home because for me doing all these class prog tunes is a real trip back to my roots. |
| 2007-09-11 20:03:42 |
Rudess |
When I left the classical world it was the YES- GENESIS- ELP and GENTLE GIANT etc that really changed my world |

What made you decide to do an album consisting of mostly covers with your own 'special touch' ? |
| 2007-09-11 20:04:48 |
Rudess |
These are the pieces that effected perhaps the most. I thought it would be a great project to go back and cover them. usually I am not one to learn other peoples music- only interested in their style more then the details but in this case I thought it would be a great project |

So, Hello. What are your thoughts on music downloading? How do you see the current DRM-model - have you looked at any alternatives? Where do you believe it's going in the future? |
| 2007-09-11 20:06:00 |
Rudess |
I think there is a big problem in our industry. A lack of awareness and caring about the artist. Some of it of course is ignorance. Like when somebody put TARKUS on youtube a few weeks ago- that was probably the height of ignorance |
| 2007-09-11 20:06:18 |
Rudess |
I do like the world of legal downloaded though and am quite fond of itunes |
| 2007-09-11 20:06:21 |

how did you get in to playing electronicly as opposed to classical piano? |
| 2007-09-11 20:07:14 |
Rudess |
Somebody from my high school brought over a Sonic 6 Moog synthesizer and I played it for hours sitting on my bed at home. I knew things were going to seriously change after that experience. |

What is the side of DT wich you like the most; the melo side, the prog side, the heavy side? |
| 2007-09-11 20:07:57 |
Rudess |
I guess I like the melodic prog side and the glory rock (also prog) stuff the best. The metal is cool but it is not totally where my spirit is at. It is fun to play however! |

What is a good synthesizer to start of with |
| 2007-09-11 20:08:53 |
Rudess |
Depends what you are trying to do. There are synths like the ROland SH201 which a subtractive synth which is a great starting instrument because it is powerful and straight ahead |
| 2007-09-11 20:09:44 |
Rudess |
All the companies make starting simpler instruments like Korg and Roland and Yamaha and this day and age they are all really good. |

I'm new in a band, what is the principal advice that you can give us for a great start? |
| 2007-09-11 20:10:37 |
Rudess |
You have to be really focused and work hard to acheive the sound that is in your musical mind. It takes time and energy - something that is not easy to come by but crucial if you want results. Practice- focus and remember to breathe |

What do you plan on playing at Moogfest in NYC? |
| 2007-09-11 20:11:13 |
Rudess |
Actually I am sitting in the room right now with the technical guru Richard Lainhart and we are going to be playing a very cool set of electronic music that night |
| 2007-09-11 20:11:21 |
Rudess |
with visuals!!! |
| 2007-09-11 20:11:52 |
Rudess |
We will be using Richards new Buchla Synth- I will be playing the V-Synth GT by Roland as well as my brand new Little Phatty from MOOG!! |
| 2007-09-11 20:12:38 |
Rudess |
The infamous Bert will be doing the visuals that night controlling the CG-8 Roland visual synthesizer and the PR80 video player |

Do the melodies that you and DT write just come out in weird time signatures or are they planned out to be in certain time signatures? |
| 2007-09-11 20:13:25 |
Rudess |
We always laugh because sometimes the odd meters come more naturally then the even ones. It is not unusual for us to write something or for me to play something and then think.... What the hell time signature is that in! |
| 2007-09-11 20:13:26 |

not like I am thinking I want to compose in an odd time signature at this point. It is just natural and my own little strangeness (and theirs too) |

in the future, you will compose some classical pieces for symphonic orchestra?? are you interested in these world? |
| 2007-09-11 20:14:28 |

I have often thought about created a concerto for synthesizer and orchestra. When I retire I will do that. Or before! |

There's a possibility that you make another "An Evening With John Petrucci And Jordan Rudess" Album?? Man that album RULES! |
| 2007-09-11 20:15:14 |
Rudess |
I would love to do that and we will look for the opportunity. It has been a little tough to find that with our Dream Theater work and solo careers but I hope we can do that again because it was FUN!! |

Hi Jordan. Do you have a business hour routine? I mean, x hours studying, x hours composing and x hours practicing with the band? |
| 2007-09-11 20:16:32 |
Rudess |
No. Depending on what is going on and what work needs to be done my schedule shifts alot!! Sometimes I will be very involved for instance with the family activities in my life and then the next week locked in my studio going insane at my synths. Always keeping the fingers moving even as I type this to you!! |
| 2007-09-11 20:16:35 |

Is it true that you had a HUGE hand in the arranging of the orchestra pieces for Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence? |
| 2007-09-11 20:16:48 |
Rudess |
Well yeah man. |
| 2007-09-11 20:17:21 |
Rudess |
If you listen to the original it is very orchestral (done on synths) so a big part of Jamshieds job was to flesh out the arrangements for the real orchestra, |
| 2007-09-11 20:17:43 |
Rudess |
Jamshied is a very talanted friend of mine and took what I gave him and expanded on it beautifully of course |

Finally the new LTE 3 will hit the streets on October 23rd. Mike and I are really excited about it becuase we have been anxious for these jams to come out. We both felt like there were some really special moments throughout the sessions and it's cool that now we can share it with all of you. |

| 2007-09-11 20:19:43 |

Other then that I have not really listened to much of there music although I know that they are very talented guys |

How did you hear about the Memotron? |
| 2007-09-11 20:21:17 |
Rudess |
I was at the Musik Messe in Germany and walking the halls when I heard that classic old sound and looked up and there it was. I started to talk to the guy there and imagined that that instrument would be a cool addition to my scene with DT. |
| 2007-09-11 20:21:21 |

was it weird having to learn a bunch of songs that you didn't write when you first joined the band |
| 2007-09-11 20:22:31 |
Rudess |
No- it was fun but a lot of hard work. Some of the sounds I did not have as presets on my synth - like the Erotomania- Six oclock organ sound. That was a bitch to make on the Kurzweil and took a lot of subtle layers and weird tweaking. Then of course I found out that it was a preset on some Roland synth that Kevin Moore had. Oh well.... |

| 2007-09-11 20:26:41 |

Well I think DT has matured a lot in every way. I think the blend of personalities is the best it has ever been for one thing. I also think that my background in classical music and synthsizer programming mixed with being an orchestrator (for synths) plays a big part of the change in the group |

I think that the three you mentioned are gods among musicians. They had extraordinary natural gifts. |
| 2007-09-11 20:28:37 |

I think of the three I like Bach the most actually. Big influence in my love of counterpoint. |

A sink and dishwasher at least |
| 2007-09-11 20:29:39 |

actually for one thing it will have the ability to never interrupt the sound while changing patches. |
| 2007-09-11 20:30:12 |

I really did enjoy that Deep Purple album. Had fun programming a rockin bunch of Organ sounds, and learned alot about rock organ playing. Lord was the master. My favorite cover though (and the most work for me) was Dark Side Of the Moon |
| 2007-09-11 20:31:31 |

How do you feel the popularity of the internet has effected Dream Theater and music as a whole? |
| 2007-09-11 20:37:52 |
Rudess |
Well the internet has played a very large roll in DT's career I think. We are really a band that has benefitted from the new world of internet communication. I think that in many cases the music business has suffered from the internet because there are just so many bands and some much illegal downloading going on. I think in a few years things will settle in to a whole new groove |

These days I have a wonderful new tech whose name is Robert Dorion. I walk on stage and everything is dialed in beautifully and all I have to do is play. My main instrument in stage is the Korg OASYS and most of what you hear is coming from that. |
